Disasters Hub

Business opportunity: SmartNews partnered with YouGov in September 2021 to survey 1,000 participants across key information categories. The study revealed extreme weather as a top content driver, resonating with both users and non-users alike—achieving a 71% average engagement rate. This insight directly informed our content strategy and product roadmap.

Solution: Led generative research to uncover how people seek and respond to climate-related information during crises. While the YouGov survey identified weather as high-engagement content, in-depth user interviews revealed critical unmet needs: users didn't just want weather updates—they needed hyperlocal context, immediate action guidance, and trusted sources during panic-driven moments. These behavioral insights, invisible in survey data, shaped the foundation of a climate disaster hub with design decisions prioritizing timely alerts, localized content, and trust-building features.
